2019 SARCCM Annual Meeting Report

On November 14-15, 2019, the 2019 SARCCM Annual Meeting was successfully held in Qingdao Blue Ocean Hotel, Qingdao, China. The theme of this annual meeting is Coastal Ecological Environment and Bay Area Governance. The meeting was hosted OUC SARCCM (hereinafter referred to as the Center), co-organized by the School of International Affairs and Public Administration and School of Ocean and Atmosphere.

The experts attending this annual meeting include: Professor Xiao Hua Wang, the Australian Director of the Center; Professor Jingping Xu, Department of Marine Science and Engineering of Southern University of Science and Technology; Professor Zaijin You, School of Civil Engineering of Ludong University; Professor Yaping Wang, State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Sciences of East China Normal University ; Dr. Hongyuan Shi, School of Civil Engineering of Ludong University; experts from Ocean University of China include: Professor Yingjie Ma, from the School of Law; Professor Xueguang Ma, China Director of the Center, School of International Affairs and Public Administration; Associate Professor Wu Wen, School of Ocean and Atmosphere; Associate Professor Ruiqian Li, School of International Affairs and Public Administration; Dr. Shengnan Chen, School of Foreign Languages; and Ph.D. students Xiaoqin Yu and Xue Cheng from the College of Ocean and Atmosphere.

The first half of the academic session of the annual meeting was chaired by Professor Xueguang Ma. The first speaker, Professor Xiao Hua Wang gave a report entitled "2018 Sino-Australia Research Consortium for Coastal Management (SARCCM) Report". Professor Yaping Wang gave a report entitled “Vulnerability Assessment of Coastal Zones in Hainan Island”. Professor Zaijin You presented a lecture titled “Development of an In-situ Coastal Experimental Station to Assess Shoreline Protection Performance of Geotextile Sandbags”. Professor Yingjie Ma reported on the theme of “Regional Marine Rehabilitation Legal System”.

The second part of the academic report session of this meeting was presided over by Professor Xiao Hua Wang. Associate Professor Ruiqian Li presented a paper entitled “Discussion on the Development Path of China's Marine Spatial Planning from the Perspective of Ecosystem Services”. Xiaoqin Yu gave a talk on “Analysis of the Status, Problems and Countermeasures of Ecological Restoration of Coastal Zones in China”. Finally, the report was made by Xue Cheng. His title was “Evaluation of Ecological Efficiency from the Perspective of Environmental Pressure--Taking Cities in Zhejiang Province as an Example”.

After the end, the meeting entered the discussion session, which was presided over by Professor Jingping Xu. The meeting attendees had a lively interaction and exchange. The rigorous discussion highlights the academic innovation and profoundness; the equal exchanges and rational debates in the annual meeting have opened up academic horizons, promoted the deepening of marine governance academic research, and provided new ideas and methods for building a smart ocean.
