SARCCM's new research link with the Academician Institute of Coastal Material Transport and Integrated Environmental Management at OUC, April 2015

SARCCM has established a collaborative research link with the newly established “Academician Institute of Coastal Material Transport and Integrated Environmental Management” at OUC. This Institute aims to promote the university’s multi-disciplinary research in coastal science and management, and carry out both basic and applied research in a number of interdisciplinary areas including oceanography and integrated coastal zone management.

The launch of the Academician Institute of Coastal Material Transport and Integrated Environmental Management of Ocean University of China was held with a Research Workshop in the College of Physical and Environment Oceanography on April 27, 2015. Prof. Xianglong Jin, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, together with Prof. Yegang Sun, the Chairman of the University Council, Ocean University of China, unveiled the plaque of the Academician Institute.

Dr Peiying Li, the First Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration (SOA); Dr Jianguo Wang, the National Marine Environmental Monitoring Center, SOA; Dr Jianping Xu, the Second Institute of Oceanography, SOA; A/Prof. Xiao Hua Wang, founding Director of UNSW Sino Australian Research Consortium for Coastal Management; Prof. Xianwen Bao, Deputy Dean of College of Physical and Environmental Oceanography; Prof. Guangxue Li, Dean of College of Marine Geoscience; Prof. Xuchen Wang, Dean of College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering; Prof. Xiulin Wang, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering; and Prof. Genqing Fu, Dean of the College of Literature and Journalism, attended the launch. Prof. Bao presented an outline of the Institute, the work that had started, and plans for the Institute’s development. Prof. Xianglong Jin indicated that scientific research should be conducted according to the demand of social economic needs; and that basic research should be converted into industry applications and improved productivity. Prof. Yegang Sun acknowledged the significance of the establishment of the Institute. He believed that the Institute could promote the university’s multi-disciplinary research in coastal science, and hoped that it could carry out both basic and applied research in a number of interdisciplinary areas.

The Directors from the Human Resources and the Research Office also attended the launch ceremony.

The launch was followed by a Research Workshop. Dr Keqiang Li presented a paper ‘Hydrodynamics and its coupling to biogeochemistry in the heavily impacted coastal oceans’ on behalf of the offshore aquatic environment group of the Institute. Dr Zhigang Yao gave a presentation on ‘Coastal observation and forecasting system’ on behalf of the observation and hydrodynamic modeling group. Dr Dehai Song gave a presentation on ‘Sediment transport dynamics and integrated coastal zone management in turbid estuaries’ on behalf of SARCCM. A/Prof. Wang reported SARCCM’s recent work on reclamation and its impacts in the Yellow and East China Seas.
