UN Ocean Decade in Action: Kick-off Workshop for UN Ocean Decade Project No.78.7. Building Coastal Resilience Against Climate Change

On 1 August 2025, the kick-off workshop on No.78.7. Building Coastal Resilience Against Climate Change was held in Singapore by the Sino-Australian Research Consortium for Coastal Management (SARCCM) for the UN Ocean Decade-endorsed project. This workshop, which aimed to gather global experts to deliberate on building coastal resilience against climate change, attracted over 30 participants from 12 countries, including the Australia, United States, Canada, Singapore, China, Vietnam and Indonesia, both in person and online.

Distinguished speakers shared their latest research and initiatives on storm surge modelling, climate action and fisheries resilience, highlighting global efforts to sustain marine ecosystems and improve climate adaptability. From NOAA's insights into marine ecosystem sustainability, UNESCO's the Decade Coordination Office innovative ocean data sharing strategies to Dalhousie University’s climate action transforming, participants explored cutting-edge solutions for our changing planet.

The workshop concluded with a forward-looking session led by Prof. Xiao Hua Wang, outlining next steps to set the stage for collaborative efforts to address pressing coastal challenges. This includes a proposal for the 2025 Climate Resilient Fisheries Engagement Grants as part of Blue Convergence Fund’s Climate Resilient Fisheries portfolio. The workshop not only showcased world-class research but also laid essential work for future international climate adaptation efforts.
