The launch of “Dynamic Response of Coasts
and Estuaries to Human Impacts – Problems and Solutions”
was a resounding success, featuring insightful
discussions on one of the most pressing coastal
environmental issues on October 10th 2024.
Hosted by the Peer into Research seminar program at the
UNSW Canberra ADFA Officers Mess, the event opened with
a warm welcome from Dr. Paul Fraser. Professor JD
Dewsbury, Head of School of Science, UNSW Canberra,
introduced the author, Professor Xiao Hua Wang, whose
expertise and passion for coastal oceanography and
management shone throughout the entire event.
In Professor Wang’s book, case studies are used to tell
a story about how coastal environments respond to severe
human-induced perturbations and climate change, and what
has gone right and wrong from environmental and resource
management point of view. The readership of the book
includes high level undergraduate Oceanography students
and workers from Oceanography, Coastal Engineering and
Management. His book reading and presentation
highlighted key aspects of the book, which covers
coastal processes such as marine heatwaves, rising sea
levels, storm surges and flooding, coastal erosion and
pollution, while offering theories, models, and
solutions for creating sustainable management plans.
Before the engaging Q&A moderated by Dr.
Fraser, where attendees explored the challenges and
future solutions facing coasts and estuaries, Professor
Wang presented a signed copy of his book to Professor
Dewsbury as a gesture of gratitude for his continued
support and leadership. The event concluded with
refreshments and an opportunity for mingling, where
participants continued to discuss the book’s themes in a
more informal setting.
The book launch event was sponsored by
ADFA Officers Mess, Canberra Research Unit, and School
of Science, UNSW Canberra.
